BYO SIP Trunk for AI Voice Agents: Connect Your Carrier or PBX
Keep your phone numbers and your carrier. Here is how to route calls from your own SIP trunk or PBX to a Taliiq voice agent, and what to check when calls do not arrive.
Most businesses already have a phone number and a carrier they trust. You should not have to move either to put an AI voice agent on the line. With BYO SIP (bring your own carrier), your existing SIP trunk or PBX forwards calls to a Taliiq agent, and the number your customers already call stays the same.
Two ways to route calls over SIP
| Path | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Managed SIP | A SIP extension hosted by Taliiq, no carrier needed | Testing, or SIP-to-SIP calling |
| BYO SIP | Your own carrier or PBX trunk (Twilio, Telnyx, Asterisk, FreePBX and similar) forwards calls into Taliiq | Production numbers you already own |
Set up a BYO SIP trunk
- Open Manage, Integrations, SIP and add a SIP trunk. Give it a name.
- Add one or more termination gateways: the IP addresses or hostnames your carrier sends calls from. Each gateway has a port (default 5060) and a transport: UDP, TCP or TLS.
- If any gateway is a hostname, turn on digest authentication and set a SIP username and password. Set the same credentials on your carrier's side.
- Save the trunk. At this point nothing is live yet.
IP whitelist or digest authentication
Taliiq limits who can call in on a trunk in one of two ways. Every gateway that is a real IP address is added to an allowed list, so only traffic from those addresses is accepted. Digest authentication adds a username and password the carrier must present on each call.
A hostname cannot be turned into a whitelist entry, because the real source address can change. If every gateway on a trunk is a hostname and digest authentication is off, the trunk would have no restriction at all, so Taliiq does not let you save it in that state.
Attach the trunk to a channel
A saved trunk only starts accepting calls once it is linked to a SIP channel.
- Open Build, Channels, SIP and add a channel with BYO SIP Trunk as the source.
- Choose the voice agent, or a squad of agents, that should answer.
- Enter the inbound number in international format, for example
+201234567890. This is the number your carrier sends in the SIP To header. - Pick your trunk from the list and save.
If calls do not arrive
- The trunk saves but no calls reach the agent. Check that it is attached to a SIP channel. Saving a trunk alone does not provision anything.
- Your carrier reports rejected calls. Confirm the gateway IP matches the address your carrier really sends from, and that port and transport match its configuration.
- The save is refused. Either every gateway row was blank, or all gateways are hostnames with digest authentication off.
Need calls to stay off the open internet? Taliiq also offers a private SIP link that you can attach to a BYO trunk. The full reference is in the SIP channel guide.
