How to Choose an AI Voice Agent Platform: 8 Questions to Ask
Per-minute prices are easy to compare and easy to misread. These eight questions show what a voice agent platform will really cost and how well it will fit your business.
Voice agent platforms advertise a per-minute price, and the numbers look close. They rarely mean the same thing. Before you sign, ask these eight questions. Each one comes from a mistake that is easy to make when you only compare headline prices.
1. What is the all-in cost per minute?
A platform fee is usually only one part of the bill. Speech recognition, the language model, the voice, and telephony are often billed separately, either by the platform or directly by the providers. Ask for the total for 1,000 real minutes of your own call type, and ask whether the provider costs carry a markup.
2. How do you connect your phone numbers?
If you already have numbers and a carrier or PBX, check that you can bring them. Look for support for your own SIP trunk, and ask what the platform charges for it. Our guide to connecting your own SIP trunk shows what a setup involves.
3. Can you choose the AI providers?
The best provider for speech, language and voice changes every few months. Look for a platform that lets you pick per job, use your own provider account if you wish, and switch without rebuilding the agent.
4. How good is it in your customers' language?
A language list proves little. Dialects matter: an agent that handles formal Arabic can still sound wrong to a customer speaking Egyptian or Gulf Arabic. Test with real recordings of your own callers, not a demo script.
5. What happens after the call?
Answering is half the job. Check whether the agent can take actions during and after a conversation, such as booking, updating a record or handing off to another agent, and whether routine back-office work can run without a person watching.
6. Can you see every call?
You need a transcript, the cost of each call, and the ability to replay it. Without these you cannot find out why a call went wrong or what it cost you.
7. What are the guardrails and data rules?
Ask what the agent is not allowed to say or do, how that is enforced, who can read recordings, and how long they are kept.
8. How long until the first live call?
Count the time from sign-up to a real call on your own number. If it takes a developer weeks, the price per minute is not the main cost.
